The city of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, gained world attention in the Global Hard & Core Technology Conference 2017 held from Nov 7 to 8.

The conference took on a uplifting theme with bold proclaims: "Hard & Core Technology Changes the World, Shapes the Future and Enhances Xi'an".

The conference was designed to set up a sharing platform where professional talents are able to share scientific and technological achievements and explore potential opportunities to develop hard technologies.

More than 1,000 participants including academic experts, outstanding enterprise representatives, investors and government officials came ready to see what the future holds for hard technologies at the opening ceremony.

The conference would put on 16 forums focusing on the technologies in fields of artificial intelligence, aerospace, biotechnology, information technology, new materials, new energy and intelligent manufacturing.

In the opening ceremony address, Wang Yongkang, Party secretary of Xi'an, explained the city's desire to build itself into an international metropolis along the Belt and Road of Xi'an and to provide a nurturing environment for the development of hard technologies.

What is hard technology?

The conception of hard technology was put forward by Mi Lei, a researcher from Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mi explained that hard technologies refer to those sophisticated and original technologies that are impossible for others to imitate or copy.

"In short, hard technology is more advanced than high-technology and is the force to boost social development and change the world,"Mi said.

"AlphaGo, intelligent robots and 3D printing technology are all emerging hard technologies around the world," said Steve Huffman, founder of Founders Space – a world leading incubator and accelerator. Steve also encouraged startups to innovate these products and services.

Wang Fei, vice ddirector of the administrative committee of Xi'an New Area, also expressed his confidence in hard technology by saying that the technology is the base to develop high-end equipment manufacturing industries and the drive to speed up social and economic transformation.

Hard technology changes people's lives

The world's first unmanned aerial vehicle with a load capacity of 1.5 tons made a successful trial flight in Shaanxi recently, demonstrating the application of hard technology in people's lives and its potential for a complete change in lifestyle.

"In the future, when people finish their work, the pilotless automobile will drive them home by optimal route. The intelligent home appliances will also prepare the hot water and coffee ready before the host gets home," anticipated Xu Demin, professor from Northwestern Polytechnical University

Even in an already-technologically-advanced society, hard technologies have the potential to propel us into a new age of technology. At the exhibition hall of the conference, visitors were able to witness the latest hard technologies, such as the infrared imaging technology which can help nurse distinguish the blood vessels on patients' hand back.

Hard technology develops in Xi'an

Thanks to the great number of academic institutes, colleges and universities, hard technologies develop rapidly in Xi'an. The city ranks six in terms of hard technology development index among the 24 candidate cities and tops the list in West China, according to a report released by the National Academy of Innovation Strategy at the conference.

Hard technology has become a signature of the city. Forty UAVs developed and produced by Northwestern Polytechnical University made a debut at Zhurihe Parade Ground, surprising the world with advanced technologies.

The city also took efforts to apply hard technologies into practical uses. An incubation platform CASSTAR oriented on hard technologies was founded in Xi'an in 2013. As of now, the platform has invested in more than 200 enterprises, introduced 60 professional teams to Xi'an and provided jobs to at least 5,000 people.

Xiang Libin, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), revealed that CAS is preparing to set up a comprehensive science park in Xi'an to further boost academic and scientific development in the city.
