A China-Europe freight train loaded with car accessories, household items, and other overseas products imported by China's e-commerce giant JD.com arrived in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, on May 21.

This cross-border e-commerce train is a joint effort of JD.com and Xi'an International Trade and Logistics Park, which is expected to advance Xi'an's cross-border e-commerce logistics development, and strengthen the city's role as a new highland of opening up and a trade center under the Belt and Road Initiative, according to Han Liu, general manager of international supply chain of JD Logistics.

The train departed from Germany's Hamburg on May 5, passed Poland, Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan, and reached Xi'an within 16 days, approximately 24 days faster than traditional sea transportation.

Also, its transportation cost is much lower, only one fifth of air transportation, making it a safe, efficient, and convenient cross-border transportation channel for heavy products and those that do not require immediate arrival.

The train can directly deliver goods from places of origin to destinations all over China with no need to transship the goods separately, and wait for customs clearance after arriving in China.

The merchants can trace the whereabouts of the goods and can sell the goods even when they are on the way. And then they can dispatch the products to consumers or the nearest bonded warehouses to consumers when the products arrive.

With this, the delivery period will be shortened from previous 45 days to 15 days, which saves cost, improves efficiency, and gives consumers a better shopping experience.

Han Liu also explained that choosing Xi'an as the destination of the train was due to the logistics advantages of the Xi'an Port.

The Xi'an International Trade and Logistics Park serves as a pivot for the city's and the entire province's opening up. It has built China's largest inland port and a three-tiered logistics system combining sea, land and air transportation.

It has also built a thorough industrial development basis and a convenient logistics and trade chain for cross-border e-commerce companies, based on the city's China-Asia and China-Europe freight trains and cross-border e-commerce pilot platforms.

In 2017, the park achieved 5.04 million export and import orders and total trade volume of $158 million.

Later, the park will work with JD Logistics to make the train a regular cross-border e-commerce transportation channel. 70 of such trains will be launched this year to import more quality European products for Chinese companies and consumers and help Xi'an build a cross-border e-commerce center.

Sun Yimin, director of the administration committee of Xi'an International Trade and Logistics Park, said that the successful launch of the train is a practice of transportation channel promoting trade and industrial development.

The park will continue to strengthen its cooperation with leading Chinese and overseas trade and logistics enterprises like JD.com to expand opening up channels, optimize opening up platforms, and further develop opening up industries and turn the city into the largest opening up area in Shaanxi and even the West China.
